CHAPTER 6

Bar Fondi was an adorable little bar and café establishment in Rome. That’s right, Rome. After Lavender questioned Luisa’s friends and I took photos on the streets outside their buildings—discovering that Sarah had visited both of them—we decided to hold a meeting and eat before we took our next step. And, no, we hadn’t told Lavender about the photos.

I sipped my coffee and nibbled my ham and cheese panini while, under the protection of a bubble of silence, Lavender told us everything he’d found out. According to the time Luisa’s friend Anita had seen them, it meant Sarah hadn’t been missing for quite as long as we thought, but only by an hour. We were taking that as positive news.

“After Anita told Sarah that she hadn’t seen Luisa for a month, she did tell her that Luisa had texted her two weeks ago and told her she was meeting her ex for lunch. Other than that, she didn’t give Sarah anything much.”

“So, we check the ex’s house?” That seemed the logical conclusion. Not that she’d definitely be there, but it was all we had.

Imani finished her cappuccino. “That’s all we have to go on, so yes. I’m thinking you have his address, Lavender?”

“Yep. I sure do. He was renting, though, so we’d better hope he hasn’t moved.”

Will downed his espresso in one gulp and ran a hand through his hair. He looked at me with tired eyes. “I hope we’re not chasing around like this tomorrow. We’re running out of places to look.”

I grabbed his hand and squeezed. “We’ll find her. I assume you’ve tried tracking her phone?”

He nodded. “It’s off.”

I sighed. Of course it was. As if he wouldn’t have tried that in the first place. “Well, let’s get Lavender to question the ex. He’s a witch, so we need to tread carefully.”

Imani looked at Lavender. “Do you know how to create a mind shield? We don’t want him reading your mind without you realising—it could be his special skill.”

“Ah, yes, but I haven’t done it for a long time. Hang on and let me put it up, then try and read my mind.” His magic came across as playful as it cascaded down my scalp. “I’m ready.”

Imani and Will both stared at Lavender, concentration on their faces. After a minute, they sat back. Will gave a hint of a smile. “You’ve got a strong shield. Nice work.”

Lavender smiled and puffed out his chest. “Thank you.” His face grew serious. “How do you want me to play this?”

Will rubbed his chin. “He’ll think it’s weird if you ask about Sarah. Maybe say you’re worried about Luisa, and you haven’t heard from her, and that her family asked you to see if you could find her. Also say that in light of the theft, you want Luisa to know you’re her friend and you just want to know she’s okay. Say that you know she cared about him and you figured she may have reached out to him; that’s why you’re there.
